II. Book Review

That we, as human beings, are generally believed to become extraordinary if we are born with natural talents. However, in this book, the author seeks to emphasize that talent is not something that guarantees success or the achievement of remarkable things. Several points I would like to share based on this book begin with the first: the title chosen by the author already reflects that the main theme of the book is about “GRIT” within a person. Angela aims to make the reader realize, first and foremost, that success is born from perseverance and long-term passion for a goal—not merely talent.

Second, grit is not something that naturally exists in every individual. It is a quality that can even surpass those born with talent. Grit is the result of effort and hard work that cannot be measured by time. It does not come from innate talent, but rather from desire and deep love for what one is doing.

The third point emphasized in this book is about Growth Mindset. Even in failure, one must keep trying. Since grit is not something we are born with, it requires persistent effort toward a goal, over and over again. One becomes more resilient after overcoming failure. The growth mindset referred to in this book is about our willingness to fight, to keep doing something again and again, regardless of how difficult the process may be—because we want to grow with that mindset.

Fourth, it must be underlined that grit is born from a deep, personal purpose. Therefore, grit is inseparable from passion and love for a specific goal.

And the fifth point is the role of parents and teachers as contributors to the development of grit. They are key factors in shaping grit within an individual.

This book captivates the hearts of its readers. It has received countless positive reviews, even from renowned writers such as Malcolm Gladwell, and from people across various social levels. What makes this book truly unique is the author herself, Angela Duckworth, who shares her personal experience in developing grit within her own life. This is further strengthened by research she conducted across a wide range of people—young and old—which allowed her to produce such an extraordinary book.

The book presents unique and inspiring stories arranged beautifully throughout its pages, making the reader feel surprised by new insights and rare stories they encounter. This book is highly recommended for those who are just starting their life journey, building motivation, setting goals, and seeking the true meaning of life.
