II. Book Review
After reading this book, I realized there were so many things I had never known before. Honestly, I also came from the same experience as the author, in which topics related to “sex education” are often seen as taboo and overly sensitive. This book discusses the importance of sex education, especially for girls and young women, to truly understand themselves and their bodies.
Since childhood, societal norms and systems of knowledge have distanced women from their own bodies, making them feel alienated; even unfamiliar with who they truly are. Reading this book felt like receiving precious knowledge, something I rarely ever hear being discussed in social life, even though it turns out to be an incredibly crucial topic for everyone.
This book also teaches us, as women, to take ownership of our own bodies to understand clearly what we want and need, so we won’t easily give something away that could potentially harm us. Because in the end, if something does go wrong, it is often the woman who bears the greatest burden.
However, the author does not place blame on anyone if something has already happened. What we’ve been told about womanhood such as the idea of “virginity” is, in fact, a cultural hoax. It was created by our own society, sometimes even by our own parents. This book reveals how many myths about sex are embedded within our culture, causing women to be afraid to speak up, to ask questions, or even to say no, trapped under the shadows of false moral rules that were never truly based on truth.
So many of those myths are broken down in this book. That’s why I call this a book of women’s empowerment.
To all the women out there: let’s learn together to understand, love, and respect our bodies and become the first person to empower ourselves.
